In 1995 when the Hinge Day Centre began as a forum some ground rules were set.  The ground rules included respect for individuals and ownership of ones behaviour and responsibilities.  This ethos is still maintained at the Hinge and includes workers, young people, students and volunteers including the Executive Commitee and any other individual associated with the organisation.

Although it is recognised that each individual will have differing levels of responsibility in relation to their contributions to the Hinge, it is important to recognise that each contribution is of equal value to the whole.

The Hinge Group (as it is now known) is a voluntary organisation, registered charity and company limited by guarantee.  It's principle centre is based in Goole however in September 2008 it opened its first satellite centre in Bridlington.  The Goole centre primarily works with young people aged 25 and under however the Bridlington centre works with anyone, any age with any issue.

Our service users are our members and as such to become a member they must undertake an assessment of need.  The assessment focuses on the circumstances that surrounds the young person whilst also giving an outline of the policies and procedures and services of the Hinge.  Self, friends, family or other organisations can refer a young person to the centre.  On receiving a referral the Duty Officer will contact the young person with an appropriate appointment.

The centre operates as a "drop in" centre with provision to young people of hot drinks, food, shower and laundry facilities.  The building which is open 5 days a week is on one level and consists of: a reception are, a shared open office space, 2 private offices, a computer suite including kitchen and all access toilet facilities.

The staff will advise, inform and support young people who are homeless or threatened with homelessness.  The Hinge acts as a gateway to and works in partnership with all agencies related to young people's need in Goole and surrounding areas.  Also on offer are basic needs training, resettlement workshops which incorporate budgeting skills, cookery and skills for life.  Computer courses complement the free access to the internet and email facilities via the IT suite which was funded by the "Princes Trust" Big Boost fund during 2007.

The Hinge is managed by a voluntary Executive Committee made up of a diversity of people with the common interest of promoting the general health and social well being of young people from Goole and surround areas.  Our principle of partnership and empowerment have enabled The Hinge Cetnre to secure a positive reputation with young people and the community of Goole.
